Member News Issue 4 July/ Aug 2010

Thank you to all members who helped and to those who took part in round 5 of the PNSW Marathon 10 series held at swallow rock on July 11. We again conducted a successful event and were complimented by Tony Hystek – President of PNSW as well many visiting paddlers from other clubs. Special thanks to the ladies and Nick who managed to provide delicious cooked food and drinks and to Warren Trick who with Kevin Nettle and Bert Laurendet produced the start/finish line and turning cans. Warren used his own boat to place and retrieve the cans and acted as safety boat at the eastern end of the course. Thanks also to Eloura SLSC who loaned us the official’s tent and radios. Grays Point Scouts lent us their hall for the day which allowed us to provide hot showers and to locate our cooking area under the verandah. In all there were 96 boats entered and 115 paddlers registered.
Thanks to Craig Findlay, Max Walker and Laurie Ward for managing the event, organizing the starts and contributing to a well run regatta.
We have formally notified PNSW that we are willing to run the marathon again next year and would feel that by the support we have received in 2009 and 2010 we should qualify in 2011. We have been advised by PNSW that there will only be 8 events next year so there will be a number of clubs that will miss out in 2011.

Our presentation night has been set for Friday November 19 at the same venue as 2009. The Woolooware Golf Club has been booked earlier this year to secure a weekend vacancy. Meal cost is the same - $38.00 for two courses. A juniors menu is also available. We need numbers before the end of the season so please indicate your intention to Margaret Ryall Egan, Peter Sigal or Craig Findlay. Invitations will follow as a reminder during September but numbers before then will help us plan another great evening.

Our AGM is to follow on the following Friday November 26 after our daylight saving paddle – this will be held at the Grays Point Guide hall (next to the Grays Point shops) at around 7.00 to 7.30PM. As with all Annual General Meetings - all positions are declared vacant and nominations are accepted for the new committee for 2011. For this we will need nominations for positions on the committee – any person who has a preferred interest is invited to nominate and take part in maintaining our strong position as one of the best traditional clubs in the country.

Our club is only 5 years away from celebrating our 50th anniversary – we recommend a reading of our early history now posted on our website – Kevin nettle is busy preparing a history chronology of Lilli Pilli / Cronulla Sutherland KC which is a timely project after 50 years of Canoe/ Kayak activity on the Hacking. It makes great reading and will be a permanent record for future generations of Kayakers in Sutherland Shire. Any member who has access to past events should talk to Kevin. To view the above article click on the history link at our website. www.cronullasutherlandkayakclub.com .

Don’t forget the Hacking (the rock) marathon... This race is on September 25 more details to follow. That’s about it for July / August. More next month.

READ our March NEWSLETTER. Important information for the coming Race Season starting 3rd April 2010.

Cronulla Sutherland Kayak Club Inc.
Member News Issue 1 March 2010

Our regular ‘Spraysheet’ newsletter is not available for the 2010 season – this is because the Editor’s position was not filled at the last AGM / committee election.
The committee is aware of the need for better communication throughout the club hence the evolution of the member news sheet which we hope will be informative and regular. The Member News will be posted on the notice board at the registration desk IN LARGE PRINT & BOLD and will be available on our Website :- www.cronullasutherlandkaykclub.com each month generally following our monthly committee meetings.

The 2010 season gets underway April 3rd – this will be a 5Km preseason race – no registration nor boat numbers or points awarded. It is Easter Saturday and is expected to be fairly quiet. Point score races start the following weekend. Check out the 2010 race program on the Website. Thank you to Max Walker and the race committee for coming up with a varied program for 2010. This year there is an increase in the number of the popular handicap races, there will be a long course and short course option, juniors will have an earlier start and will paddle over a short distance and there is a return to a few old feature events. These are the ‘Ironman’ fun event, an Open Day, the Hacking Classic and the Hacking Marathon. The classic starts at Gunnamatta Bay and the Marathon will run to South West Arm. Our turn for the State Marathon occurs on July 11.

CSKC membership fees have been reduced this year. $10.00 for everyone – per person. Race fees are $2.00. Everyone who paddles pays the same. Membership renewal and new members can only join by manual (paper) application – not on line. Membership fees become due the first day (April 10) of the point score race series.
Participation in our club events requires membership of Paddle NSW for individual and Club Liability Insurance . Paddle NSW membership entitles the member to participate in State title events including Marathon and Sprint series. Australian Canoeing membership is required only if the member wishes to compete in National title events. Paddle NSW membership should be done on line and becomes due July 1 each year. PNSW and AC fees for 2010 are to be confirmed.
Members should consult the PNSW website – www.paddlensw.org.au click on the Archive tab for all the news.

Our club rescue boat has been subject to some damage – we must acknowledge and thank Geoff Hine, Ellis Kirkman and Bruce Clark for recovering the boat and repairing / restoring back to road and seaworthy condition. Money has been allocated for a new 6HP motor. We are in need of a secure and safe accommodation site for our rescue boat – suggestions welcomed.

That’s about it for March. We will try to concentrate on newsy bits and restrict to one page.

More next month.

April NEWSLETTER - Our Season has Started.

Cronulla Sutherland Kayak Club Inc.
Member News Issue 2 April 2010

The first point score race for the 2010 season started April 10 with 39 members competing for points. The results are available on our website:- www.cronullasutherlandkayakclub.com.
Each week we shall try to post the results within the following week and we would ask that should there be any errors that these are made known by return by just clicking on the Email link. Lorraine and Dallas are doing a great job on our website updates.
Congratulations to young Holly Smith doing a terrific time of 27.51 for the 5Km. Pretty good for an under 16. She is part of the national talent development program being run by the Australian Sports Commission under the charge of Brian Trouville and Rod Smith. We hope to see more of the young athletes coming for the Saturday races as their program permits.
The open day was also held on April 10 with a small number of visitors trying their hands at kayaking for the first time. Amongst them was a young Jeremy who stayed in various boat types for most of the day – we hope his parents allow him to take up a canoeing activity in the future. Some visitors from Germany attended and were impressed with what we do and the beauty of the Hacking River. Thank you to all the helpers who made the open day successful.
Our second club race on April 17 was well attended and concluded with our Iron man event. Watch the website for results. By keeping tabs on your times you will be able to compare your current performance with previous times and make the appropriate excuses where necessary.
The PNSW 10,000m sprint was held at Penrith SIRC also last Saturday April 17 which was not well attended by the clubs. CSKC members that participated were Ben Constable, Geoff O’loughlan, Bill Hick, Laurie & Jill Ward, Peter Sigal and Liz Wilson officiating.
The attendance was such that some classes could not be classified as being constituted.
Ben won the open K1 which unfortunately was not a constituted class.
The 3rd club race April 24 is the first of the President’s Cup handicap races followed by the first doubles race.
Saturday April 24 is also the second PNSW Marathon 10 series race at Cooks River – those participating may have time to return to Swallow Rock in time for a 2PM start.
The club safety boat is now ready for use however needs to be run in for the first 8 hours. We have not moved it from its present location as we are awaiting acceptance of a more permanent storage site.
Part of our Paddle NSW marathon responsibility is to provide turning, separation and finishing line cans – Warren Trick and Bert Laurendet have taken on the job of producing the cans. We have noticed Warren checking water depths and doing paint adherence testing lately so they are well advanced – the club is really appreciative of their efforts.
Paddle NSW are seeking members from all clubs to undertake coaching and training courses. Funding for the courses are currently provided by PNSW which wont last forever – anyone interested should obtain more details from the PNSW website :- www.paddlensw.org.au. The club would benefit greatly from additional qualified trainers and coaches.
Our club owns a number boats which are available to all members – especially new paddlers trying the sport before purchasing a boat of their own and those wishing to hop into K1 or be part of a K2 or K4 team. We are in the process of creating a register of where these boats are located – anyone who is in possession of our club boats could they kindly Email Craig Findlay at cpfindlay@aol.com and advise him of what you have and how many. In future as these boats move around they will be signed for and recorded in the register.

That’s about it for April. More next month.

CSKC MASTERS TEAM wins 65 Medals at the 2009 Australian Masters Games.

2009 Australian Masters Games

Thirteen masters paddlers represented CSKC at the 2009 Australian Masters Games held in Geelong VIC from 26/02/09 to 01/03/09. Our team ( Lorraine Harper-Horak, Bill Hick, Bert & Kaye Laurendet, Kevin Nettle, Dallas Newman, Matt Pepper, Margaret Roye, Peter & Cara Sigal, Kay Smith and Jill & Laurie Ward) won 65 medals in total: 45 Gold, 15 Silver & 5 Bronze.

This massive haul of medals came from both Marathon and Sprint events held on the Barwon River in very trying conditions. Boat access to the river proved to be extremely difficult with a drop of more than one metre from the pontoons. Rocks, weed, steep banks, muddy water, warnings of blue-green algae and heatwave conditions didn't exactly enthral us.

Weed, glorious weed.                                                               Pontoon Entry

The Singles Marathon was run on the first day with entry to & exit from, the water proving even more difficult than we anticipated. Boats & paddles were scratched, nevertheless a successful day for the CSKC team winning 3 Gold & 1 Bronze.

Friday, (the Doubles Marathon), was forecast to be windy and extremely hot. Warnings of impending heatwave conditions across Victoria forced the organisers to start the Marathon event one hour earlier. No complaints from any of us! We didn't really want to paddle a marathon in 40°C. The temperature rose steadily. Fortunately we were finished and off the water before it peaked. Despite the heat the CSKC Team performed brilliantly, winning 7 Gold & 2 Silver medals. The Sprints were the next challenge awaiting us.

The 500m and 200m Sprints were to be held on the Rowing course just downstream from the Marathon course. The original plan was for competitors to enter the water from the same pontoons and then paddle down to the start of the Rowing course. This was a recipe for disaster! Imagine trying to get in and out of doubles and singles quickly for multiple Sprint races. After much discussion, the officials decided to move to the Rowing course so we could access the river more easily. It was easier; one small 'pebbly beach' which a maximum of 2 boats could use at a time. We weren't complaining however, as entering the water here was 'a piece of cake' compared to the pontoons at the Marathon course.

Saturday, (the 500m Sprints), proved to be our most successful day. The weather was reasonably kind to the competitors and with better water access we were keen to race. The CSKC team was on fire, winning 18 Gold, 9 Silver & 1 Bronze. Spirits were high indeed!

The Sprint Course                                                        Lorraine and Dallas- Photo courtesy of The Geelong Advertiser

On arrival at the course on Sunday, (the 200m Sprints), it was obvious that wet and windy conditions would prevail for our final day of competition. A power blackout only added to the dreary conditions. After yesterday's success, nothing was going to dampen our spirits! We collected another 17 Gold, 4 Silver & 3 Bronze medals to add to our already impressive medal tally.

Congratulations to all of our Masters Team. Not only are they serious in competition they are serious in celebration too! A special mention to Kaye & Bert Laurendet who won medals in the Swimming events as well.

We hope to emulate this success with a larger CSKC Team at The World Masters Games to be held in Sydney later this year.
