Thirteen masters paddlers represented CSKC at the 2009 Australian Masters Games held in Geelong VIC from 26/02/09 to 01/03/09. Our team ( Lorraine Harper-Horak, Bill Hick, Bert & Kaye Laurendet, Kevin Nettle, Dallas Newman, Matt Pepper, Margaret Roye, Peter & Cara Sigal, Kay Smith and Jill & Laurie Ward) won 65 medals in total: 45 Gold, 15 Silver & 5 Bronze.
This massive haul of medals came from both Marathon and Sprint events held on the Barwon River in very trying conditions. Boat access to the river proved to be extremely difficult with a drop of more than one metre from the pontoons. Rocks, weed, steep banks, muddy water, warnings of blue-green algae and heatwave conditions didn't exactly enthral us.

Weed, glorious weed. Pontoon Entry
The Singles Marathon was run on the first day with entry to & exit from, the water proving even more difficult than we anticipated. Boats & paddles were scratched, nevertheless a successful day for the CSKC team winning 3 Gold & 1 Bronze.
Friday, (the Doubles Marathon), was forecast to be windy and extremely hot. Warnings of impending heatwave conditions across Victoria forced the organisers to start the Marathon event one hour earlier. No complaints from any of us! We didn't really want to paddle a marathon in 40°C. The temperature rose steadily. Fortunately we were finished and off the water before it peaked. Despite the heat the CSKC Team performed brilliantly, winning 7 Gold & 2 Silver medals. The Sprints were the next challenge awaiting us.
The 500m and 200m Sprints were to be held on the Rowing course just downstream from the Marathon course. The original plan was for competitors to enter the water from the same pontoons and then paddle down to the start of the Rowing course. This was a recipe for disaster! Imagine trying to get in and out of doubles and singles quickly for multiple Sprint races. After much discussion, the officials decided to move to the Rowing course so we could access the river more easily. It was easier; one small 'pebbly beach' which a maximum of 2 boats could use at a time. We weren't complaining however, as entering the water here was 'a piece of cake' compared to the pontoons at the Marathon course.
Saturday, (the 500m Sprints), proved to be our most successful day. The weather was reasonably kind to the competitors and with better water access we were keen to race. The CSKC team was on fire, winning 18 Gold, 9 Silver & 1 Bronze. Spirits were high indeed!

On arrival at the course on Sunday, (the 200m Sprints), it was obvious that wet and windy conditions would prevail for our final day of competition. A power blackout only added to the dreary conditions. After yesterday's success, nothing was going to dampen our spirits! We collected another 17 Gold, 4 Silver & 3 Bronze medals to add to our already impressive medal tally.
Congratulations to all of our Masters Team. Not only are they serious in competition they are serious in celebration too! A special mention to Kaye & Bert Laurendet who won medals in the Swimming events as well.
We hope to emulate this success with a larger CSKC Team at The World Masters Games to be held in Sydney later this year.
